Abu al-‘Abbās Muhammad ibn Ya‘qūb al-Asamm said:
“Two Khawārij circumambulated the Ka‘bah, and one said to the other: ‘None from this creation will enter Paradise except for me and you.’ His companion replied: ‘Paradise, whose width is as the width of the heavens and the earth, was built for me and you alone?’ He said: ‘Yes.’ So his companion responded: ‘Then it is yours,’ and abandoned his (companions) belief.”
(Sharḥ Uṣūl I‘tiqād al-La’laka’ī 2317)
Compare this arrogance and self-delusion with the words of ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb (may Allah be pleased with him), the rightly-guided caliph, promised Paradise, and possessor of great virtues and merits. When he was on his deathbed, a young man from the Anṣār entered and said:
“Rejoice, O Leader of the Believers, with glad tidings from Allah! You have achieved a great status in Islam, then you were appointed as a successor and ruled with justice, and then you will achieve martyrdom after all this.”
ʿUmar (may Allah be pleased with him) replied:
“I wish, O my nephew, that this would be a sufficient recompense, with nothing against me and nothing for me.”
(Sahīh al-Bukhārī 1392)
This comparison highlights the humility of ʿUmar, despite his immense achievements, against the arrogance of the Khawārij, who deemed Paradise exclusive to themselves.
