Among the remarkable stories that Allah has repeated and detailed in the Qur’an is the story of Musa (peace be upon him) with Fir’awn. This is because it contains profound wisdom, significant lessons, and impactful admonitions. It also highlights Allah’s dealings with the believers and the wrongdoers, elevating and aiding the believers while humiliating and defeating the disbelievers: “These are the Verses of the manifest Book (that makes clear truth from falsehood, good from evil). We recite to you some of the news of Musa and Fir’awn in truth, for a people who believe. Verily, Fir’awn exalted himself in the land and made its people sects, weakening (oppressing) a group (children of Israel) among them, killing their sons and letting their females live. Verily, he was of the Mufsidun (those who commit great sins and crimes, oppressors, tyrants, etc.).” [Surat Al-Qasas, 28:2-4]
When Allah, the Exalted, willed to save these people from the oppression, tyranny, arrogance, and aggression of Fir’awn, He arranged circumstances that neither Fir’awn nor his allies nor his enemies could perceive. Allah commanded the mother of Musa (peace be upon him) to place her newborn son Musa in a closed basket and then cast it into the river, promising her that He would protect him and return him to her, and that he would grow up safely from their plots and that He would make him one of the messengers: “And We inspired the mother of Musa (saying): ‘Suckle him [Musa], but when you fear for him, then cast him into the river and fear not, nor grieve. Verily, We shall bring him back to you, and shall make him one of (Our) Messengers.’” [Surat Al-Qasas, 28:7;]
She did as she was commanded, and Allah guided the basket with Musa inside, tossed by the waves until it reached a place near Fir’awn and his family: “Then the household of Fir’awn picked him up, that he might become for them an enemy and a (cause of) grief. ” [Surat Al-Qasas, 28:8;]
This illustrates that caution cannot protect one from divine decree. Fir’awn had feared Musa so much that he killed the sons of the Children of Israel because of him, yet Allah decreed that Musa would grow up in Fir’awn’s house, under his care and supervision.
In His mercy towards Musa and his mother, Allah prevented Musa from accepting milk from any woman. So they took him to the market, hoping to find someone whose milk he would accept. Then his sister came forward and said: “And she said to them: ‘Shall I direct you to a household who will rear him for you, and look after him in a good manner?’” [Surat Al-Qasas, 28:12;]
Her statement included a recommendation for the household, highlighting their ability to care for him. Thus, Allah returned Musa to his mother so that her heart would be at ease, and she would know that Allah’s promise is true, though most people do not know: “So We restored him to his mother, that her eye might be comforted, and that she might not grieve, and that she might know that the promise of Allah is true. But most of them know not.” [Surat Al-Qasas, 28:13;]
When Musa (peace be upon him) reached full strength and maturity, Allah granted him wisdom and knowledge; wisdom to understand religious laws and settle disputes among people, and abundant knowledge. Then, events unfolded, including the incident where Musa killed an Egyptian. The leaders of Fir’awn conspired to kill him, and their plan became known to Musa, prompting him to leave Egypt: “So he left the city, fearful, looking about. He said: ‘My Lord! Save me from the people who are Zalimun (polytheists and wrongdoers)!’” [Surat Al-Qasas, 28:21]
During his journey, Allah honored him by enabling him to marry a righteous woman. Allah then bestowed upon him the greatest honor and favor, making him one of the messengers: “He (Allah) said: ‘O Musa! I have chosen you above men by My Messages, and by My speaking (to you). So hold that which I have given you and be of the grateful.’” [Surat Al-A’raf, 7:144;]
Allah supported him with manifest signs and clear proofs: “Put your hand into your bosom; it will come forth white and shining, without harm (or disease), and draw your hand close to your side (to be free) from fear. These are two signs from your Lord to Fir’awn and his chiefs. Verily, they are the people who are Fasiqun (rebellious, disobedient to Allah).” [Surat Al-Qasas, 28:32;]
Allah commanded Musa to go to Fir’awn and invite him to the truth, instructing him to speak to him gently, perhaps he may take heed or fear Allah. Musa prayed to Allah for assistance in fulfilling his duty and to help him in his mission: “(Musa) said: ‘My Lord! Verily, I killed a man among them, and I fear that they will kill me. And my brother Haroon (Aaron) – he is more eloquent in speech than me, so send him with me as a helper to confirm me. Verily, I fear that they will belie me.’” [Surat Al-Qasas, 28:33-34;]
Allah responded to his prayer: “(Allah) said: ‘We will strengthen your arm through your brother, and give you both power, so they shall not be able to harm you, with Our Signs, you two as well as those who follow you will be the victors.’” [Surat Al-Qasas, 28:35;]
Allah’s command came to Musa and his brother Haroon (peace be upon them both) to carry out this mission and fulfill this great purpose: “Go, you and your brother, with My Ayat (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.), and do not, you both, slacken and become weak in My Remembrance. Go, both of you, to Fir’awn, verily, he has transgressed (all bounds in disbelief and disobedience and behaved as an arrogant and as a tyrant). And speak to him mildly, perhaps he may accept admonition or fear (Allah). They said: ‘Our Lord! Verily, we fear lest he should hasten to punish us or lest he should transgress (all bounds against us).’ He (Allah) said: ‘Fear not, verily, I am with you both, hearing and seeing. So go you both to him, and say: Verily, we are Messengers of your Lord, so let the Children of Israel go with us, and do not torment them. Indeed, we have come with a sign from your Lord! And peace will be upon him who follows the guidance! Truly, it has been revealed to us that the torment will be for him who denies, and turns away.’” [Surat Ta-Ha, 20:42-48;]
With courage, strength, and determination, Musa and Haroon (peace be upon them) conveyed Allah’s message and carried out His command.
Allah sent Musa (peace be upon him) with clear signs and manifest authority to Fir’awn, who arrogantly proclaimed to the people, “I am your lord, the most high.” Musa came to him with clear signs and invited him to the Oneness of the Lord of the heavens and the earth. Fir’awn, denying and rejecting, said:
“And what is the Lord of the ‘Alamin (mankind, jinn, and all that exists)?” [Surat Ash-Shu’ara, 26:23]
He denied the great Lord whose command governs the heavens and the earth and who has left signs of His existence in all of creation. Musa responded:
“The Lord of the heavens and the earth, and all that is between them, if you seek to be convinced with certainty.” [Surat Ash-Shu’ara, 26:24]
In the heavens and the earth, and everything between them, some signs necessitate certainty for those who are sure. Fir’awn, mocking Musa, said to those around him:
“Do you not hear (what he says)?” [Surat Ash-Shu’ara, 26:25]
Musa reminded Fir’awn of his origin, that he was created from nothing and would return to nothing, just like his forefathers who perished before him. Musa said:
“Your Lord and the Lord of your ancient fathers!” [Surat Ash-Shu’ara, 26:26]
Fir’awn, unable to refute the truth, resorted to mocking and falsely accusing:
“Verily, your Messenger who has been sent to you is a madman!” [Surat Ash-Shu’ara, 26:27]
Fir’awn mocked the Messenger and the One who sent him. Musa countered, stating that true madness lies in denying the great Creator:
“The Lord of the east and the west, and all that is between them, if you only understand!” [Surat Ash-Shu’ara, 26:28]
When Fir’awn was unable to refute the truth, he resorted to threats and warned Musa of imprisonment:
“If you take a god other than me, I will certainly put you among the imprisoned.” [Surat Ash-Shu’ara, 26:29]
Musa continued to bring clear signs as bright as the sun, while Fir’awn tried his utmost, through all his efforts and propaganda, to suppress and deny them. Fir’awn said to his people:
“O my people! Is not mine the dominion of Egypt, and these rivers flowing underneath me? Do you not see then? Am I not better than this one (Musa), who is despicable and can scarcely express himself clearly? Why then are not golden bracelets bestowed on him, or angels sent along with him?” [Surat Az-Zukhruf, 43:51-53]
Thus, Fir’awn belittled his people, and they obeyed him. Indeed, they were a people who transgressed. When they angered Us, We exacted retribution from them, and We drowned them all. Thus, We made them a precedent and an example for the later generations. [Surat Az-Zukhruf, 43:54-56]
As for the story of their drowning, Allah commanded Musa to lead his people out of Egypt at night. Fir’awn became extremely alarmed and sent messengers throughout all the cities of Egypt to gather the people to pursue them. Fir’awn and his people set out in pursuit of Musa, heading toward the Red Sea:
“When the two groups saw each other, the companions of Musa said: ‘We are sure to be overtaken.’ The sea is before us, and if we enter it, we will drown. Fir’awn and his people are behind us, and if we stay here, they will catch us.” [Surat Ash-Shu’ara, 26:61]
Musa said:
“No! Indeed, my Lord is with me; He will guide me.” [Surat Ash-Shu’ara, 26:62]
When Musa reached the sea, Allah commanded him to strike it with his staff. Musa did so, and the sea split into twelve paths, with the water standing like towering mountains between the paths. Musa and his people passed through safely, while Fir’awn and his soldiers entered the sea. When Musa and his people had crossed, and Fir’awn and his army were inside, Allah commanded the sea to return to its original state, drowning Fir’awn and his soldiers.
Look, may Allah have mercy on you, at the lessons and signs in this story: Fir’awn killed the sons of the Children of Israel out of fear of Musa, yet Musa was raised in Fir’awn’s own house under the care of his wife! Musa confronted this tyrant, proclaiming the truth: “Indeed, your Lord is Allah, the Lord of the worlds.” Allah saved Musa from Fir’awn’s clutches! The flowing water stood firm like mountains by Allah’s power, and the path through the sea was dry without mud or slipperiness! Allah destroyed this tyrant with the very element he boasted about, the rivers flowing beneath him, by drowning him in water!
The manifestation of Allah’s signs in His creation is a great blessing deserving of gratitude and praise, especially when it involves the victory of Allah’s allies and the defeat of the allies of Shaytan. When the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) arrived in Madinah, he found the Jews fasting on the tenth day of this month, Muharram, saying it was the day when Allah saved Musa and his people and drowned Fir’awn and his people. Musa fasted in gratitude. The Prophet said:
“We have more right to Musa than you.” So he fasted on that day and ordered its observance. [Sahih al-Bukhari, 2004; Sahih Muslim, 1130]
The Prophet (peace be upon him) was asked about fasting on this day and said:
“I hope from Allah that it will expiate the sins of the past year.” [Sahih Muslim, 1162]
Therefore, a Muslim should fast on the day of ‘Ashura, and also on the ninth day, to attain the virtue of fasting on ‘Ashura and to differ from the Jews, as the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) commanded.
