أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو جَعْفَرٍ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ الْبَغْدَادِيُّ ، ثَنَا إِسْمَاعِيلُ بْنُ إِسْحَاقَ الْقَاضِي ، ثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ الْمَدِينِيِّ ، ثَنَا سُفْيَانُ ، ثَنَا أَيُّوبُ بْنُ عَائِذٍ الطَّائِيُّ ، عَنْ قَيْسِ بْنِ مُسْلِمٍ ، عَنْ طَارِقِ بْنِ شِهَابٍ قَالَ : خَرَجَ عُمَرُ بْنُ الْخَطَّابِ إِلَى الشَّامِ وَمَعَنَا أَبُو عُبَيْدَةَ بْنُ الْجَرَّاحِ فَأَتَوْا عَلَى مَخَاضَةٍ وَعُمَرُ عَلَى نَاقَةٍ لَه ، فَنَزَلَ عَنْهَا وَخَلَعَ خُفَّيْهِ فَوَضَعَهُمَا عَلَى عَاتِقِهِ ، وَأَخَذَ بِزِمَامِ نَاقَتِهِ فَخَاضَ بِهَا الْمَخَاضَةَ ، فَقَالَ أَبُو عُبَيْدَةَ : يَا أَمِيرَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ أأَنْتَ تَفْعَلُ هَذَا ، تَخْلَعُ خُفَّيْكَ وَتَضَعُهُمَا عَلَى عَاتِقِكَ ، وَتَأْخُذُ بِزِمَامِ نَاقَتِكَ ، وَتَخُوضُ بِهَا الْمَخَاضَةَ ؟ مَا يَسُرُّنِي أَنَّ أَهْلَ الْبَلَدِ اسْتَشْرَفُوكَ ، فَقَالَ عُمَرُ : أَوَّهْ لَوْ يَقُولُ ذَا غَيْرُكَ أَبَا عُبَيْدَةَ جَعَلْتُهُ نَكَالًا لَأُمَّةِ مُحَمَّدٍ – صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ – إِنَّا كُنَّا أَذَلَّ قَوْمٍ فَأَعَزَّنَا اللَّهُ بِالْإِسْلَامِ فَمَهْمَا نَطْلُبُ الْعِزَّةَ بِغَيْرِ مَا أَعَزَّنَا اللَّهُ بِهِ أَذَلَّنَا اللَّهُ .

Tariq ibn Shihab narrated: Umar Ibn Al-Khattab went towards As-Shaam and with him was Abu Ubaidullah Ibn Al-Jarrah, they came across a ford (a shallow place close to a river). Umar was upon his Camel which he came down off, he took his sandals off and put them over his shoulder, he took hold of the reins of the camel and crossed the ford. Abu Ubaidullah said: Oh Leader of the believers, Do you do this, take off your sandals and put them on your shoulders, and take the reins of your camel and lead across the Ford!? I am delighted that the people of the country have honoured you. Umar said: Oh, if only someone other than you would have said this Abu Ubaidah, I would have made him an example for the nation of Muhammad,
“Verily, we were a dishonoured people and Allah honoured us with Islam. If we seek honour from anything besides that with which Allah honoured us, Allah will disgrace us.”
