Khutbah – Signs of Allah in Winter

All praise is due to Allah. We praise him, we seek His help, we seek His forgiveness, and we seek refuge in Allah from the evil within ourselves and our evil deeds. Whoever Allah guides, there is none to misguide him. Whoever Allah leads astray, there is none to guide him. I testify there is no one worthy of worship but Allah alone, without any partners, and that Muhammad, peace, and blessings be upon him, is His servant and His messenger.

Allah Almighty said, “O you who believe! Fear Allah as He should be feared, and die not except in a state of Islam (as Muslims) with complete submission to Allah.” (Surah Ali-Imran:102)

And Allah Almighty said, “O mankind! Be dutiful to your Lord, Who created you from a single person (Adam), and from him (Adam) He created his wife [Hawwa (Eve)], and from them both He created many men and women and fear Allah through Whom you demand your mutual (rights), and (do not cut the relations of) the wombs (kinship). Surely, Allah is Ever an All-Watcher over you.” (Surah An-Nisa:1)

And Allah Almighty said, “O you who believe! Keep your duty to Allah and fear Him, and speak (always) the truth. He will direct you to do righteous good deeds and will forgive you your sins. And whosoever obeys Allah and His Messenger he has indeed achieved a great achievement ” (33:70-71)

The truest word is the Book of Allah and the best guidance is the guidance of Muhammad. The evilest matters are newly invented matters, for every newly invented matter is an innovation. Every innovation is misguidance, and every misguidance is in the Hellfire.

To proceed, O Believers, servants of Allah: Fear Allah Almighty, then know, may Allah have mercy on you, that among the great things that benefit the servant in this life is contemplation of the signs of Allah and meditation on the wonders of His creatures, for that – servants of Allah – increases faith, strengthens certainty, and magnifies the relationship with the Lord of the worlds

Verily! In the creation of the heavens and the earth, and in the alternation of night and day, there are indeed signs for men of understanding.

(Surah Ali-Imran Ayah 190)

Servants of Allah: Among the great signs of Allah are the different conditions. Night and day, hot and cold, winter and summer, spring and autumn, and Allah has great wisdom in that, and may Allah bless you to ponder over the blessing of Allah upon His servants in winter entering summer and summer over winter how it is in stages and time, and if the entry of one of them into the other was a sudden, it would have harmed the bodies and destroyed them, and spoiled the plants and destroyed them, what is the greatest blessing and what is for it.

Servants of Allah: Allah has great signs that numerable in winter, such as thunder, lightning, thunderbolts, rain, and hail. Allah Almighty says:

And Ar-Ra’d (thunder) glorifies and praises Him, and so do the angels because of His Awe, He sends the thunderbolts, and therewith He strikes whom He wills, yet they (disbelievers) dispute about Allah. And He is Mighty in strength and Severe in punishment. (Surah Ar-Raad Ayah 13)

And it is established in the Musnad and Sunan Tirmidhi and other than them upon the authority of Ibn Abbas – May Allah be pleased with him, he said:

“The Jews came to the Prophet (ﷺ) and said: ‘O Abul-Qasim! Inform us about the thunder, what is it?’ He said: ‘An angel among the angels, who is responsible for the clouds. He has a piece of fire wherever that he drives the clouds wherever Allah wills.’ They said: ‘Then what is this noise we hear?’ He said: ‘It is him, striking the clouds when he drives them on, until it goes where it is ordered.’ They said: ‘You have told the truth.’ They said: ‘Then inform us about what Isra’il made unlawful for himself.’ He said: ‘He suffered from sciatica, and he could not find anything agreeable due to it (to consume) except for camel meat and its milk. So for that reason he made it unlawful.’ They said: ‘You have told the truth.'”

Allah the Almighty and high said concerning the rain and cold:

See you not that Allah drives the clouds gently, then joins them together, then makes them into a heap of layers, and you see the rain comes forth from between them. And He sends down from the sky hail (like) mountains, (or there are in the heaven mountains of hail from where He sends down hail), and strike therewith whom He will, and averts it from whom He wills. The vivid flash of its (clouds) lightning nearly blinds the sight. Allah causes the night and the day to succeed each other (i.e. if the day is gone, the night comes, and if the night is gone, the day comes, and so on). Truly, in these things is indeed a lesson for those who have insight. (Surah An-Nour Ayah 43-44)

Servants of Allah: Extreme cold is from the (Zamhareer) roar of Hell, just as extreme heat is from its poisons. In the Two Sahihs, on the authority of Abu Hurairah, may Allah be pleased with him, he said: The Prophet, (ﷺ), said:

“The (Hell) Fire complained to its Lord saying, ‘O my Lord! My different parts eat up each other.’ So, He allowed it to take two breaths, one in the winter and the other in summer, and this is the reason for the severe heat and the bitter cold you find (in weather).

So this is to remind us – O servants of Allah – that it is with fire, and whoever endures the extreme cold and heat in this world, then how is the sea of Hell and its turmoil!! May Allah protect us and you from it

Servants of Allah: We have burdened our souls with many worries related to this world. The worries of years and times, the worries of high prices and cheapness, the worries of winter before it comes, the worries of summer before it comes, successive concerns, so what did we keep in our hearts from the concerns of the Hereafter and its horrors and conditions?! And in the established supplication:

Oh Allah let not worldly affairs be our greatest care or all that we know about.

Servants of Allah: With the advent of winter, do the people living in comfort and ease remember their poor and needy brothers who sleep on the ground and wrap themselves under the sky, whose bodies were touched by the severe cold and its severity pierced their bones?! Have we not feared the heat of Hell and its turmoil by sympathizing with these people!! and in the narration:

Protect yourself from the fire even with a part of a date.

And the date, servants of Allah, is a quilt that benefits those in the cold. Just as the cover is a quilt, the warm garment is a quilt, and the coat is a quilt, so give alms ‘O the one whom Allah has given to abundantly, even if it is only a small amount, because in your opinion it may be insignificant, and for that poor, needy person, it is great, and do not despise anything of favor.

Servants of Allah: Winter is a cold spoil (for gaining reward) for the worshipers and the obedient. Its day is short, making it easier for one to fast, and the night is long, making it easier for one to pray. Umar ibn al-Khattab, may Allah be pleased with him, said: “Winter is the booty of the worshipers.” And Ibn Masoud, may Allah be pleased with him, said: “Welcome winter, in which blessings descend, and the night is long for standing, and the day is short for fasting.” And he said. Al-Hassan Al-Basri, may Allah have mercy on him, said: “A good time for the believer is winter; its nights are long for him to pray, and his days are short for him to fast.” These are the feelings of the predecessors, may Allah have mercy on them, in the winter: joy, happiness, vigor and activity, earnestness and diligence in bringing one closer to Allah. As for the conditions of many people at this time, they are in neglecting their obligations and duties, cheating on the forbidden and hated, arrogantly transgressing the limits of the Lord of the earth and the heavens, and staying up late at night for what angers Allah and darkens the hearts and weakens the light of faith.

Oh Allah, rectify our conditions and the conditions of Muslims, and return us to you, our Lord, a beautiful response, and guide us to the paths of peace, and bring us out of darkness into light, and make for us our Allah in the succession of nights and days a lesson and a reminder, and in the succession of months, seasons and years an admonition and consideration. I say this saying, and I seek forgiveness from Allah for me, you, and the rest of the Muslims for every sin, so seek forgiveness from Him, and He will forgive you. Indeed, He is the Forgiving, the Merciful.

Second Khutbah

Praise be to Allah, great benevolence, abundant in bounty, generosity, and gratitude, and I bear witness that there is no one worthy of worship except Allah, alone with no partner, and I bear witness that Muhammad (ﷺ) is His servant and Messenger; May Allah’s blessings be upon him, his family and all his companions, and peace be upon him abundantly.

To proceed, O believers, servants of Allah: I advise you and myself to fear Allah, for whoever fears Allah, he will protect him and guide him to the best of his religious and worldly affairs. Fear of Allah – servants of Allah – is that the servant acts in obedience to Allah, hoping for Allah’s reward, and that he abandons disobedience to Allah. Fearing Allah’s punishment.

Servants of Allah: And what we must remember in this time is that the Muslim has great connection with Allah and trusts in his Lord, the Majestic and Exalted. The Prophet, (ﷺ), when he feared an enemy, said:

O Allah, we ask You to restrain them by their neck and we seek refuge in You from their evil

In all his affairs and all his conditions, the Muslim resorts to Allah and takes refuge in Him, Glory be to Him

And whoever holds firmly to Allah, (i.e. follows Islam Allah’s Religion, and obeys all that Allah has ordered, practically), then he is indeed guided to a Right Path.

(Surah Al-Imran Ayah 101)

And from the Sunnah – Oh servants of Allah – it is for the Muslim to say in such circumstances.  We place our reliance in Allah, best of disposers as the companions may Allah be pleased with them used to say, Allah the high said:

Those (i.e. believers) unto whom the people (hypocrites) said, “Verily, the people (pagans) have gathered against you (a great army), therefore, fear them.” But it (only) increased them in Faith, and they said: “Allah (Alone) is Sufficient for us, and He is the Best Disposer of affairs (for us).”

The meaning of – حسبنا الله – is we rely in Allah.

And Allah, the Majestic and Exalted, is sufficient for those who put their trust in Him and relied on Him and turn to Him in all their affairs. We ask Allah, the Majestic and Exalted, that He does not entrust us except to Him, for He is sufficient for us, and He is the best disposer of affairs.

Send peace and blessings be upon the Chosen Prophet Muhammad bin Abdullah, (ﷺ) as Allah commanded you to do so in His Book, and He said

Allah sends His Salat (Graces, Honours, Blessings, Mercy, etc.) on the Prophet and also His angels to (ask Allah to bless and forgive him). O you who believe! Send your Salat on (ask Allah to bless) him, and (you should) greet (salute) him with the Islamic way of greeting (salutation). (Surah Al-Ahzab Ayah 56)

And he (Prophet), may Allah’s prayers and peace be upon him, said: ((Whoever prays for Allah’s blessings upon me once, will be blessed for it by Allah ten times.).

O Allah, bestow Your favor on Muhammad (ﷺ) and on the family of Muhammad (ﷺ) as You have bestowed Your favor on Ibrahim and on the family of Ibrahim, You are Praiseworthy, Most Glorious. O Allah, bless Muhammad (ﷺ) and the family of Muhammad (ﷺ) as You have blessed Ibrahim and the family of Ibrahim, You are Praiseworthy, Most Glorious.

May Allah be pleased with the Rightly Guided Caliphs, the Imams, the Guides, Abu Bakr, Umar, Uthman and Ali, and be pleased with all of the Companions and those who followed them until the Day of Judgment.

O Allah, reinforce Islam and Muslims, O Allah, reinforce to Islam and Muslims, O Allah, reinforce  Islam and Muslims, humiliate polytheism and polytheists, destroy the enemies of religion, and protect the possession of religion, O Lord of the worlds, O Allah, grant victory to those who support your religion, O Allah, grant victory to our brothers everywhere, O Allah, grant them victory in Palestine and everywhere, O Allah, grant them a resounding victory, O Allah, support them with your support and protect them with your protection, O Lord of Majesty and Honor. Oh Allah, protect us from the aggressors and usurpers, for they do not fail you. Oh Allah, we make (Dua) to you against them and seek refuge in you. O Allah, give the ruler the insight to do  what you love and accept, and help him in righteousness and piety, and direct him in his sayings and deeds, and clothe him in the garment of health and wellness, and grant him the righteous and sincere inner circle.

Oh Allah, give our souls piety, purify them, You are better at purifying them, You are their guardian and their guardian. We ask you for Paradise and whatever word or deed brings us closer to it, and we seek refuge in You from Hell and whatever word or action brings us closer to it. O Allah, save us from the fire, O Allah, save us from the fire, O Allah, save us from the fire, O Allah, make every judgment you have made good for us, O Lord of the worlds. Oh Allah, reconcile our hearts, reconcile us, guide us to the paths of peace, bring us out of darkness into light, bless our hearing, our sight, our wives, our offspring, our wealth, and make us blessed wherever we are. Oh Allah, forgive us all our sins. You are the first and his last, to you belongs what is secret and what is public, O Allah, forgive us and our parents and the Muslims, the Muslim men and women, the believing men and women, the living among them and the dead. Indeed, You are the Forgiving, the Merciful. And Praise be to Allah, the Lord of the Worlds .

Paraphrased from the Khutbah of Shaikh Abdur Razzaq Al-Badr
